Canby High Students Impress at Virtual State FBLA Conference; Some ‘Headed’ to Nationals

If the coronavirus pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that life goes on — even if you have to do things a little differently.

It’s a good lesson for the future business leaders of our state to learn, and those from Canby High School certainly seem to be catching on.

At the Oregon FBLA’s State Business Leadership Conference last month — an annual gathering featuring over 70 schools and 1,300 attendees that was transformed into a virtual event this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic — Canby’s delegation impressed, and some even finished at the top of their categories.

Tonya Boustead, Canby High School FBLA adviser and a board member for Oregon FBLA, said she was particularly proud of how her students adapted to the challenging and ever-changing environment.

“Some students participate in online objective testing events, while others had to film themselves giving group presentations,” she said. “I am so proud of our students for their willingness to put together these presentations and their ability to figure out the necessary technology on such short notice! They were amazing.”

Allison Bassett and Nimsi Gomez earned first place in emerging business issues, while Matthew Powell and Andrew Viter took home the gold for management decision making.

Other top finishers included Kaitlin Gartrell and Abigale Wrenn, second for global business; Peter Sansone, third for intro to business procedures; Emma Ulven, third for advertising; Sydney Cochell, Emma Hodson and Bree Marino, fourth for intro to business presentation.

These 11 students will move on to the national conference, which will also be conducted virtually this year. The 2020 National Leadership Experience kicks off at the end of June.
