Canby Man Survives Fatal Crash near Mill City

A Canby man escaped without injury after being involved in a fatal three-vehicle crash Sunday afternoon on Santiam Highway (Highway 22) between Detroit and Mill City.

Police say 43-year-old Scott Zadow, of Portland, was headed east in his Ford F-150 shortly before 3 p.m. when he sideswiped a westbound Nissan Pathfinder, driven by Canby resident Curtis Gagner, who is 42. The Ford then reportedly continued west, ultimately colliding with a VW Passat.

The Passat was operated by 50-year-old John Berquist, of Turner. He sustained fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Zadow was sent to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The highway was closed to traffic for over six hours while emergency crews worked the scene.

Police did not say what factors may have contributed to the crash, but the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact Oregon State Police.

OSP was assisted by Gates Fire Department and Oregon Department of Transportation.
