Man Killed, Deputy Hurt in Shootout near Welches

A 58-year-old man was killed and a Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office sergeant injured in a shooting Friday afternoon, which police said ensued after the suspect drew a handgun during an confrontation with law enforcement.

The sergeant was not seriously injured in the incident, which took place at the Mt. Hood Village RV Resort in Welches.

Deputies had arrived on the scene shortly before 3 p.m. to conduct a welfare check on a possibly suicidal subject, who was said to be experiencing a mental health crisis, according to a family member.

Upon arrival, deputies made contact with the 58-year-old white male subject, and a crisis negotiator attempted to reason with him and de-escalate the situation.

Officers said they attempted to use less-lethal options to subdue the subject, without success. The suspect was shot and killed by one officer after he produced a handgun, police said.

The sergeant was shot in the arm during the confrontation — though he reportedly did not realize it until he and other officers began to provide first aid to the suspect. His wound was noticed by other deputies and he was given a tourniquet. The sergeant did not fire his weapon.

Neither the man nor the sergeant have been identified.

The Sheriff’s Office and the multi-agency Clackamas County Major Crimes Team are leading the shooting investigation. Detectives from Canby PD, Molalla PD, Tualatin PD, Oregon State Police and Lake Oswego PD assisted on scene.
