“We live in an amazing town, filled with people who are compassionate, generous, who care for their neighbors,” Canby Center Director Ray Keen said during a recent community update on the COVID-19 crisis.
The Canby Center has seen demand for food and other basic necessities more than triple in the past month, as have other services in the wake of high unemployment and other economic strain related to the coronavirus pandemic.
But, despite the skyrocketing need, food banks and outreaches in the area are determined to make sure no one in Canby goes hungry in the coming weeks and months.
“Over the next few weeks, if you need food, please come and see us,” Keen said of The Canby Center and other pantries. “But if you don’t, we encourage you, please: Stay home, save lives.”
St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank

The St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank is the city’s largest food service for needy families and has also seen increased demand. The pantry, which works with the Oregon Food Bank, is located at and a service of St. Patrick Catholic Church.

The Canby Center’s Harvest Share food program has shifted to meet increased demand and other challenges presented by the novel coronavirus. Instead of the “shopping-style” experience it once was, the program now offers curbside pick-up of pre-packed boxes containing meat, dairy, fruits and vegetables.
The service is available to Canby area families and residents every Tuesday and Saturday, though clients may visit only once per week. Bilingual assistance is available.

The Canby Adult Center serves area seniors through its Meals on Wheels delivery program, which happens every weekday except Tuesday. Recipients may elect to receive only the hot meals on delivery days or can also choose to receive frozen meals for the off days.
Staff and volunteers are also assisting clients with delivery of basic necessities, groceries and over-the-counter medications, so those most vulnerable to the coronavirus due not need to expose themselves by going out. Delivery of prescription medications may be arranged through the Canby Fire District or Canby police.

Canby School District is providing grab-and-go meals for every child under 18 in the school district through June. Each sack meal contains breakfast and lunch.
Meals are available for pick-up at Baker Prairie, Eccles, Trost and Ninety-One School between 9 and 11 a.m. Monday through Friday. They are also being delivered by bus along these routes and at these approximate times.
