Canby One of State’s Top Schools for College Athletes

In a time where the prospect of live sports looks quite uncertain — for the immediate future, anyway — the Canby Cougars are still finding ways to stand out from the competition.

Despite the spring season that wasn’t this year, Canby High School sent more student-athletes to continue their competitive careers at the college level than almost any other school in Oregon.

The Oregonian compiled a list of the high schools with the most Class of 2020 graduates committed to college athletics, and Canby cracked the top 25, with 13.

The newspaper’s list is not comprehensive. It’s missing, for example, Mairen Chard, Canby’s top-ranked swimmer who committed to the Division I Idaho in November.

But it does include Canby goaltender Zach Heidema, Cornell College (Iowa); and track standouts Izabela Kacalek, Corban, and Matthew Powell, Grand Canyon; whose spring signings were done virtually this year thanks to the coronavirus pandemic.

Here are the other Canby athletes who plan to compete at the college level in the 2020-21 school year — or whenever athletics begin again.
