Canby Football Coach Let Go Following Winless Season

Mike Vaught will not be back at the helm of the Canby Cougars football team next season, after the Canby School District declined to renew his contract earlier this month.

The Cougs have struggled on the gridiron in recent years, but this past season was particularly brutal, as they were outscored 331-62 over the course of nine games — all losses.

In an email, Canby High School Principal Greg Dinse said “we appreciate Coach Vaught’s efforts over the years and his dedication to our students, school and community.”

He had been involved with the program for 28 years — the last eight as head coach. It was a gig he called his “dream job” when he took the position in 2010.

Dinse said the job opening will be posted after the first of the year, and that no changes to the assistant coaching staff are expected at this time, though that could change once a new head coach is in place.
